Before photography looked like this, there was tintype photography. The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is giving photography enthusiasts a chance to step back into the past with a workshop on June 16.

Love photography? Want to try your hand at something completely different?

Phillip Chin is offering a workshop at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on Saturday, June 16 in Tintype Portraiture Photography.

“In the digital age, photographers are looking to the past for alternative methods to give a signature look to their portraits,” says a write-up about the course.

The workshop gives participants a chance to experience all aspects of “wet collodion,” or tintype, image making, from coating a metal plate and using a view camera to take a picture to developing the final image.

Each student will create three to four tintype images, and supplies are included in the course fee ($86.70 regular, $69.36 seniors).

The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Studio 106 at the Shadbolt Centre, 6450 Deer Lake Ave. You can sign up at www.burnaby.ca/webreg (barcode 467609) or see www.shadboltcentre.com for more details.
