ART EXTRAVAGANZA

Art, entertainment and education combine in an upcoming fundraiser at Confederation Park Elementary.

The school is holding a fundraising community art exhibition and auction on Saturday, Nov. 26 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The night will feature student art and work from local artists, with a silent and live auction, door prizes and raffle draws.

And to add to the fun, there will be a martini bar and entertainment from special musical guests The Cupcake Affair.

It's the fifth annual community art exhibition and auction, and this year's features the work of 10 local artists.

Tickets are $10, including one beverage.

The event is designed to help out Confederation Park's Education Through the Arts program.

CRAFTY HOOPLA

OK, this presentation is totally worth going to just for the title - Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery.

Leanne Praine, coauthor of 2009's bestselling Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti, will be at the McGill branch of the Burnaby Public Library on Thursday, Dec. 1 for the presentation.

Praine will be on hand from 7 to 8 p.m. to talk about her new book (the previously mentioned Hoopla), which showcases people who take the craft of embroidery into entirely new directions.

"Hoopla is about embroidered art that rebels against the quaint and familiar embroidery motifs of flowers and swashes and focuses instead on innovative stitch artists who specialize in unusual, guerrilla-style patterns," a press release explains.

Copies of Hoopla and Yarnbombing will be on sale.

It's free, but space is limited - register online at www.bpl.bc.ca/events/ mcgill or by calling 604-299-8955.
