Pi Theatre and the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival are presenting the English Canadian premiere of David Greig’s The Events, running Jan. 17 to 28 at the Russian Hall in Vancouver.

The play, directed by Richard Wolfe with a musical score by John Browne, was inspired by the 2011 attacks in Utoya, Norway, when 69 people were killed at a summer camp. Rather than focusing on the violence, however, the production centres around Claire (played by Luisa Jojic), a female priest and choirmaster, who struggles to understand the event that changed her life. Douglas Ennenberg plays six characters opposite her.

The production features a different community choir each night – with the choir serving as spectator and performer as the singers represent the community and share both songs of their own choosing and those composed especially for the production. In total, more than 220 community members from 12 choirs will be part of the show’s run.

Burnaby’s Connie Hosie has designed the costumes for the production, having previously worked on Pi Theatre’s Long Division.

Tickets are $26 for the Jan. 17 preview and matinees, or $31 general admission. It runs Jan. 17 to 28 at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Ave.
