A cheeky Christmas satire is coming to the stage at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
The Ruby Slippers Theatre production of Hotel Bethlehem, directed by Diane Brown, is onstage at the Shadbolt Centre Dec. 14 to 18.
The play, written by Drew McCreadie, is a tongue-in-cheek take on the traditional Chrismas story - featuring a pair of geriatric, philosophizing shepherds, an incompetent pack of Roman guards, a bickering trio of wise men, an incorrigible, conniving innkeeper with a saucy servant girl, and poor Joseph, caught in the middle as his wife's labour approaches.
"Amid the hustle, bustle and migraine-inducing stress of the holiday season, the one thing people really need for Christmas is a good, long laugh," said Cory Philley, the facility and event services coordinator at Shadbolt, in a press release.
"Fortunately, McCreadie's brilliantly cheeky, festive send-up is here with humour in droves. The play is one part Fawlty Towers, one part A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - add a dash of Monty Python's Life of Brian, and heap on piles of zany, outside-the-box hilarity."
Set design is by David Roberts, sound design by Jordan Watkins, and lighting design by Jonathan Ryder, with costume design by Drew Facey.
Hotel Bethlehem is onstage Dec. 7 to 10 at Studio 16, 1545 West Seventh Ave. in Vancouver.
It's then on at the Shadbolt from Wednesday, Dec. 14 to Sunday, Dec. 18, with evening shows at 8 p.m. and matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for the Dec. 14 preview.
For the remainder of the shows, tickets are $32 regular, or $27 for students and seniors.
