WELCOME ABOARD

There's a new face on board at the Burnaby Art Gallery.

The gallery has just welcomed Brenda Finlayson as its new marketing and sponsorship coordinator.

"Brenda's extensive experience in the cultural sector, combined with her knowledge of marketing, will assist the art gallery to increase awareness, build profile for our artists, exhibitions, programs and special events, which, in turn, will benefit the whole community," said the gallery's director-curator, Darrin Martens, in a press release.

For the past three years, Finlayson has worked in marketing and program development for Ridge Meadows College. Her experience in the cultural sector has included 14 years as executive director of arts organizations, including the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council. She was also the first arts and heritage coordinator for the City of Abbotsford.

Welcome aboard, Brenda!

ART EXHIBITION

Art lovers, have you been by Deer Lake Gallery for the new exhibition yet?

Between View and Hue, by Silke Spodzieja, is on at the gallery until June 24.

"When I paint a landscape, I don't aspire to simply copy the scene that presents itself in front of me. I hope to engage the viewer with colour and texture so that they can draw their own experiences or feelings from my paintings, may it be landscapes or abstracts," Spodzieja says in an artist's statement.

"I love to jump from abstract to landscape. After I do a detailed landscape I need to change the pace and loosen up.

Sometimes I combine elements from a landscape into an abstract."

Deer Lake Gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. It's at 6584 Deer Lake Ave.
