Dalannah Gail Bowen, hailed as the “Canadian matriarch of the blues,” is coming to the stage in Burnaby.

Bowen will perform for Jazz Evensong at Brentwood Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, March 4.

The Vancouver-based singer has just released a new single and video, Somebody’s Watchin’ You, from her fifth and most recent studio album, Looking Back.

Bowen, born of African-Canadian and Cherokee heritage, is known as a prolific singer, songwriter, actress, playwright, storyteller, event producer and social activist. She’s an International Memphis Blues Awards semifinalist and a Master Artist with New York’s Blues Hall of Fame for a performing career that stretches over 40 years.

Her new release, Looking Back, features music drawing heavily from her own personal story.

“The album also takes a hard look back at our world, and our cultures,” Bowen said in a press release. “It takes a look towards our future, too.”

It features a who’s who of the local music scene, including performers such as Jim Byrnes, the Sojourners, Miles Hill, Olaf de Shield, Brian Newcombe and more.

“We could have probably called it ‘How We Spent Our Summer,’” Bowen says, recalling the release’s recording process. “We more or less missed hitting the beach, but our studio tans looked great!

“And wait till you hear what we put down.”

You can get a taste of that music at the Sanctuary at Brentwood on March 4 at 8 p.m.

Jazz Evensong continues Wednesdays at 8 p.m. at Brentwood, 1600 Delta Ave. Upcoming artists include The Hot Mammas on March 11, Holly Burke on March 18, Dylan Cramer on March 25 and Bill Weeds on April 1.
