The weekend is almost here, and in this time between snowfall, rain and sunny spots, there’s plenty to do in Burnaby. We’re continuing with our popular feature – our staff’s Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here’s our Top 5 list for Feb. 28 to March 2.
Get cultured at the recent acquisitions of First Nations and Inuit prints at the Burnaby Art Gallery, 6344 Deer Lake Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. See the significant collection of First Nations and Inuit prints, which were created during the 1970s to early 1980s period.
Get marvelling at colourful global dances at Brentwood Town Centre on Saturday, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The centre court will showcase dances from around the world, including samba fusion, ceroc dance, DANCEPL3Y, zumba and dance crew while supporting the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Bring a non-perishable food item. For more information on what to bring, visit www.foodbank.bc.ca.
Get intrigued at the men’s breakfast at Willingdon Church on Saturday, which will feature Reaksa Himm, a real-life survivor of the Cambodian killing fields, speaking on redemption and forgiveness. Tickets are $10 at the church, 4812 Willingdon Ave. For more information, contact [email protected], call 604-435-5544, or visit willingdon.org/

Get exploring your background at the Nikkei family history workshop, presented by the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre, 6688 Southoaks Cres., on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. Have you ever wondered about your Nikkei roots? Come to the workshop to learn how to research your roots either in Canada or Japan. Registration fee is $10 for members, $12 for non-members. Call 604-777-7000 ext. 109 for more information.
Get strolling in a scenic area at Deer Lake Park, which is right near all the city’s cultural and heritage sites, including the art gallery, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Village Museum. There are leisurely walking trails with beautiful views, connecting the lake to all the city’s artsy amenities. The park is a busy hub during the summer but is enjoyable for a quiet Sunday afternoon walk – rain, snow or sun.
Get listening to Le Nozze Di Figaro at the Shadbolt Centre of the Arts, 6450 Deer Lake Ave., on Saturday evening. The Burnaby Lyric Opera production breathes life into Mozart’s masterpiece with lively characters meeting life’s unexpected twists and turns with humour, grace and poignancy while singing to classical music. Get a glimpse of the count, the maid and young lovers in masks and costumes from 8 to 10 p.m. For more information, call 604-205-3000, or visit www.burnabylyricopera.org.
