Local music students are being invited to take part in the annual Festival on the Lake at the Shadbolt Centre.

The registration deadline is March 24 for the festival, which runs from April 30 to May 3, May 14 to 16 and May 28 to 30.

The festival - formerly known as the Music Man Festival - is designed to foster the love of music in a non-competitive environment, giving musicians a chance to experience master classes by world-class adjudicators.

All participants receive verbal and written comments, and top participants in each division will be invited to perform at a final concert.

Scholarships and awards are also presented to support the most outstanding and promising young artists.

For more information, call festival coordinator Donna Fishwick at 604431-6700 or email festival [email protected].

CHORAL CONCERT

Choral music fans, now's your chance to hear from a new arrival on the local choral scene.

The newly formed Burnaby Chamber Choir is offering up its première concert on Tuesday, April 3 at South Burnaby United Church.

Conductor Marc D'Anjou will lead the choir in a program that features a sampling of some of the most beautiful choral repertoire, including works by Durufle, Faure, Rutter and Bruckner.

D'Anjou, who's the music director at South Burnaby, will also perform organ solo pieces by Bédard, Bach, Vierne and Mendelssohn.

General admission is $15, or $10 for students, and tickets will be sold at the door.

"Bring your friends and be part of this wonderful beginning bringing classical music to Burnaby," a press release invites. "Who knows, you may like it so much you'll want to sing with them!"

Chang also claims many other influences - with a diverse list that includes Bach, Chopin, George Benson and Michael Jackson.

He has toured in Canada, the U.S. and Europe and, last March, he and his musicians completed a successful debut tour in B.C.
