'Hands on' approach for local art exhibit

Burnaby artist has worked in collaboration with schools and students over the years

The Burnaby Arts Council is gearing up to host a unique art event in honour of Culture Days that will give local residents a chance to get involved in creating and displaying art.

The event is called Creative Connections: A Hands On Approach to Community Art.

Local visual artist and city staffer in the parks department, Diane Moran, will be teaching a community workshop where participants will be encouraged to create a collage, poem, or drawing that will then be displayed alongside Moran's own art as part of an exhibit at Deer Lake Gallery.

Her exhibit opens Sept. 17 and the workshop is set for Oct. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Burnaby Arts Council.

In a press release, the council notes that they are hoping to focus on the visual arts in the community during Culture Days, and looking at how art can be used to be a good global and local citizen.

Moran's exhibit will feature community arts initiatives dating back to 1999 up to the present day, including work she's done in Cuba, in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and other projects that have helped create connections in community through art.

Moran told the NOW she'd like to particularly invite students and local residents who have been involved in some of her past projects to come out. That includes students from Cariboo and Burnaby Mountain secondaries, and Second Street elementary, Stoney Creek Elementary, Cascade Elementary, Capitol Hill and Edmonds Elementary Schools, as well as Queensborough Middle School.

Some of those projects have been profiled in the NOW over the years, including Hands Across Havana, Roots in the Community, Seasons Of Second Street, Home Sweet Home Banners and the B.C. To Bernard Book Project.
