The Burnaby art gallery is offering a number of public programs in connection with its Dutch masters exhibits, all designed to help make the work as accessible as possible to the community.
"We're trying to get as many people as possible, including the youngest of our audience," said assistant curator Jennifer Cane. "That's very important to us."
The events include tours (in both English and Mandarin), lectures and hands-on family programs.
Among the highlights:
Saturday, Sept. 14: The first in the speaker series has art historian Paula Swart speaking at 3 p.m. on Reflections of Holland: Artists and Landscapes near the Hague. It focuses on 17th- to 19th-century artists.
Sunday, Sept. 15: An In the BAG family program gives families a chance to try a free, hands-on studio activity, this one on ink landscapes. The drop-in program runs on the half-hour from 1 to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 28: Cane offers a free guided tour of the exhibitions at 2 p.m. At 7 p.m., there's a screening of Dutch Films in the Sky at Burnaby Civic Square (outside the Metrotown library branch). The night includes a screening of Father and Daughter, an animated Dutch short film that won the 2000 Academy Award for best animated short, and Rembrandt, Alexander Korda's 1936 biographic film about Rembrandt van Rijn.
Saturday, Oct. 5: At noon, there is a Mandarin tour of both exhibitions, led by Dong Yue Su. At 3 p.m., Krystel Chehab speaks on Splendid Sights, Familiar Sites: Rembrandt van Rijn and Dutch Landscape Prints.
Saturday, Oct. 19: Contemporary Dutch artist Saskia Jetten speaks at 3 p.m. about the Landscape of Current Dutch Printmaking.
