Some Burnaby authors will be featured when Word Vancouver hits the streets Sept. 21 to 25.
The annual literary festival runs at a variety of locations around Vancouver, culminating in a Sunday full of activities around Library Square.
Burnaby’s Kozue Uzawa is featured on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (at the library, downstairs in the Alma VanDusen Room) in an Invitation to English Tanka. Tanka is a traditional Japanese poetry form, and Uzawa will look at how to write your own tanka and enjoy tanka reading. Those in attendance will receive a complimentary copy of GUSTS, a Canadian tanka journal.
Also featured will be children’s author Ellen Schwartz, who’ll appear at 11:50 a.m. on Robson Street. She’ll be presenting from her work Heart of a Champion, a book aimed at the nine- to 12-year-old audience that’s set in 1941/42 British Columbia. It tells the story of Kenji, who longs to play on the famed Vancouver Asahi baseball team.

Lovers of photography, you’ll want to mark this date on your calendars.

Learn guidelines for working with advanced visual patterns to frame and organize your picture space,” a write-up about the seminar explains. “Learn from real-life, concrete examples from two different shooters on the development, execution and emergency of their personal artistic voices.”
The seminar is set to run from 8:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it costs $105 per person if you register ahead at www.apac.bc.ca, or $120 (cash only) at the door.
