Two Burnaby performers are taking to the stage in a new production of The Threepenny Opera.

Damon Jang and Katie Purych are in the cast of the Theatre in the Raw presentation of the 1928 classic musical by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

The classic work of early 20th-century theatre is being brought to the stage at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Ave. in Vancouver, from Nov. 16 through 27.

The show, with its biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality, follows the story of the notorious criminal Mack the Knife. It’s being reimagined as a mixture of “Victorian-era setting with a Commercial Drive flavouring,” according to a press release.

Jang and Purych appear alongside Stephen Aberle, Jenny Andersen, Martha Elisabeth Ansfield-Scrase, Kevin Armstrong, Jeff Hoffman, Ariel Martz-Oberlander, Adam Olgui, Kathleen Nisbet, zi paris, Stephen Streetand Lindsay Warnock.

Evening shows are on at 8 p.m. Nov. 16 through 20 and 23 through 27, with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Tickets are $25 regular, $20 for students, with a pay-what-you-can preview night on Nov. 16 and two-for-one admission on Wednesday, Nov. 23. See www.theatreintheraw.ca/tickets to reserve, or pay cash at the door.

CHRISTMAS CLASSIC REIMAGINED

A Burnaby actor is onstage in the next show by Exit 22 Productions.

Exit 22, the Capilano University theatre company, is staging a unique version ofA Christmas Carol, opening Nov. 17. Burnaby’s Isaac Caverzan plays the lead clown and Ghost of Christmas Future.

In Doris Baizley’s adaptation of the Dickens classic, a company of low-rate Edwardian players are putting on A Christmas Carol when their Scrooge and Tiny Tim quit – and a begrudging stage manager and his prop boy are pulled in for the key roles.

The production also promises to be unique for its acrobatic, circus-like theme – Circus West held two workshops for the actors to get into the performance style.Christopher David Gauthier has also designed Edwardian-style costumes for the occasion.

The show is onstage Nov. 17 through 27 at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano. Evening shows are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 through 19 and 23 through 26, with matinees at 2 p.m. on Nov. 20, 26 and 27. Tickets range from $10 to $22. See www.capilanou.ca to buy.

SCACCIA SAYS THANKS

A young Burnaby singer is thrilled to be taking his place alongside his idol.

Stephen Scaccia sent along a note of thanks to his local fans for voting for him in the NOW’s recent Burnaby A-List – he took second place in the Favourite Local Musician category, behind his idol, superstar Michael Bublé.

“I am so honoured. Thank you, Burnaby!” Scaccia wrote in an email.

Scaccia noted the community has supported him at a huge range of events throughout the year, including Hats Off Day, the Edmonds Fair and Italian Day at the Drive.

He’s hoping local fans will swing by the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts during the Shadbolt’s seasonal celebration on Dec. 10, when he’ll be taking to the stage at 3:45 and 6 p.m. for some classic Christmas carols.

He’ll also be onstage at the Enchant Christmas Market, which is coming Nov. 25 to Vancouver (West First Avenue and Crowe Street) – keep an eye on his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/stephenscaccia, for times.
