A former Miss New Westminster who’s pursuing studies in the performing arts is taking to the stage in a musical production in Vancouver this fall.

Emma Ciprian is starring in Bring On Tomorrow Co.’s upcoming production of 13: The Musical. The Broadway hit that debuted in 2008 was the first Broadway show ever to feature an all-teenage cast.

This production features rising professional talents from the stage and screen, all under the age of 18 – with Emma as the gossipy go-getter Cassie.

Emma, who was Miss New West in 2016, graduated from St. Thomas More Collegiate this spring and is getting set to attend Studio 58 at Langara College in January to study performing arts.

The musical, for those who don’t know it, follows the story of 12-year-old Evan Goldman, a New York City kid stuck in small-town Indiana, who’s trying to plan the world’s best bar mitzvah.

It’s onstage Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 and Oct. 4 to 8 at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. Tickets range from $13 to $34 and can be purchased at botco.eventbrite.com. Check out www.bringontomorrowco.com for more details.

MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP

Those writing memoirs can feel pulled to tell their own stories – but at the same time fear their power.

A new workshop offered by the Royal City Literary Arts Society is exploring the complexity of memoir writing and ways to deal with the sorrows and challenges it carries.

Jonina Kirton is leading the workshop, An Afternoon of Mercy for Memoir Writers, on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Anvil Centre, with host Deborah L. Kelly.

“We all have what Stephen Levine calls ‘unattended sorrow,’” explains a write-up about the workshop. “Accepting that there is much that we do not know can enrich our writing. Attending to our sorrow and letting go of the need for forgiveness or neat and tidy endings can allow us to let go of the need for ‘truth’ and the approval of others.”

The workshop costs $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Reserve a spot by emailing [email protected], or pay via Paypal at www.rclas.com/workshops.
