A heads-up for local theatre fans: high school drama students are bringing some excellent productions to the stage this month.

Remember The Outsiders? The classic teen novel by S.E. Hinton is being brought to life by Burnaby North.

Burnaby North Secondary School is staging Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of the novel from April 13 to 15 in the James Cowan Theatre at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

It’s on at 7 p.m. nightly, and tickets are available for $12 for students or $15 regular admission. Tickets are available from the office at Burnaby North (751 Hammarskjold Dr., 604-296-6875). Any remaining tickets will be available at the theatre on performance nights.

Moscrop Secondary School students, meanwhile, are taking on the Bard with a presentation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, running April 19 to 22 in the school’s Drama Room 108.

Admission is $5 for students, $10 for general admission, and tickets will be available at the door for the 7 p.m. shows.

The school is at 4433 Moscrop St. (604-296-6895).

ARTS ALIVE AT GALLERY

A reminder to all you art lovers that the Arts Alive 2016 exhibition is opening at Burnaby Art Gallery tonight (April 7).

The annual exhibition showcases the works of students from around the city – this year, it’s highlighting the work of selected high school students.

If you want to drop in to the gallery (that’s at 6344 Deer Lake Ave., for those who don’t know) to check out the exhibition, you may also want to take note of a couple of public events running in conjunction with it.

This weekend, families can take part in a drop-in In the BAG studio session, themed “Big and Messy,” running from 1 to 4 p.m. It’s free, but you’re encouraged to register ahead to save a spot (drop-ins are available as space permits).

In two weekends, on Saturday, April 23, you can also stop in to the gallery for a tour of the exhibition – guides will be available from 2 to 4 p.m.

Check out www.burnabyartgallery.ca for more on these and other programs.
