A young Burnaby performer is in the spotlight once again – this time in the Arts Club Theatre production of Godspell.
Aubrey Joy Maddock is featured as John the Baptist in the pop musical that traces the story of Jesus and the apostles.
Regular readers may remember Aubrey from last spring, when the then-12-year-old was featured as the orphan Kate in the Royal City Musical Theatre production of Annie, alongside her dad Steve as Oliver Warbucks.
She’s back in a cast led by Jennifer Copping as Jesus and Andrew Cohen as Judas.
“Godspell was never intended to be a story about religion; it was meant to be a story about community,” director Sara-Jeanne Hosie explains in a press release. “When I set out to cast this piece I did not have a specific gender, age or race in mind for any of these roles, particularly Jesus. From the moment Jennifer Copping walked into the room, there was an immediate feeling that we would follow her. Jesus as a woman breaks the mould, allowing us to tell a fresh story.”
Godspellwas composed by Stephen Schwartz (perhaps best known among today’s Broadway fans as the composer of the 2003 hit Wicked) and includes such well-known tunes as Day by Day, Learn Your Lessons Well and Turn Back, O Man.
It’s onstage at the Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage (1585 Johnston St.) from Thursday, June 18 to Saturday, Aug. 1. Shows are Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets start at $29. Call 604-687-1644 or see www.artsclub.com.
