It was working for a firm of chartered accountants that inspired Debra Purdy Kong to write crime mysteries.
Kong is the featured author at the Tuesday, Jan. 21 Spoken Ink night hosted by the Burnaby Writers' Society.
She's the author of the crime mysteries Taxed to Death and Fatal Encryption, featuring Alex Bellamy, and the Casey Holland transit security mysteries The Opposite of Dark, Deadly Accusations and the recently released Beneath the Bleak New Moon.
The Port Moody resident has also published more than 100 short stories, essays and articles for publications that include Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul, B.C. Parent Magazine and The Vancouver Sun.

The Spoken Ink reading series is presented on the third Tuesday of the month at La Fontana Caffe, 101-3701 Hastings St. in North Burnaby.
Along with the featured author, there is also an open mike session. Open mike sign-up starts at 7:30 p.m., with the reading at 8 p.m.
