MEDAL WINNERS

Four young music students from Burnaby earned some impressive hardware over the weekend.

The four students won 2011 Gold Medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music for scoring the top marks in B.C. in annual Royal Conservatory examinations.

A medal ceremony was held at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday to acknowledge the winners.

Burnaby residents who earned honours included Lucy Yuan, a student of Sylvia Sze Wai Tam, who earned top marks for Grade 3 flute.

She was joined by fellow local residents Andrea Wang, a student of Amy Margaret Tokunoh, who earned honours for Grade 4 piano; Edward Su, a student of Flavio Formigoni, who topped the Grade 6 piano ranks; and Harry Liu, a student of Maria Otto, who placed highest for Grade 6 guitar.

Kudos to the students and their teachers.

ARTISTIC PACKAGE

A Burnaby resident is one of three artists joining forces to take an artistic look at commercial packaging in a new exhibition at the Fort Gallery in Fort Langley.

Package Deal runs April 18 to May 6, with an opening reception on Saturday, April 21 from 3 to 5 p.m.

It features the work of Burnaby's Jo-Ann Sheen, along with Claire Moore and Diana Durrand.

The unifying theme of their work is to find meaning beyond the obvious commercial messaging in the plethora of package designs society is exposed to every day.

Sheen, a printmaker, uses a process called "collagraphy" to present discarded packaging materials in a new way.

"I have taken these discarded items and changed their context, examining their materiality in a different form," she explains in a press release. "They have been rescued from the recycling bin and transformed into twodimensional images."

Curious? Check out the exhibition at the Fort Gallery, 9048 Glover Rd. in Fort Langley. It's open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

You can call 6046887411 or see the website at www.fortgallery.ca for more details.

Art with fibres

Burnaby artists are everywhere, it appears.

Art lovers should check out Flourishing Fibres, a retrospective of the work of Donno Polos, at Leigh Square Community Arts Village in Port Coquitlam.

A write-up about the show notes that Polos has spent the past 20 years developing her style of painting watercolours on cotton, paper and canvas, and in creating interesting textures and layers with paint, embroidery, yarn, beads and thread.

The exhibition opened April 5 and is continuing until May 7.

A special Mother's Day afternoon tea and fabric painting workshop is then set for Mother's Day - Sunday, May 13 - from 1 to 3 p.m. School field trips are also available for May 1, 2 and 3.

Leigh Square is at 11002253 Leigh Square Pl. in Port Coquitlam. Check out www.portcoquitlam. ca and follow the link for Leigh Square under the Parks and Recreation tab for more details.
