Photos: Burnaby's Symphony in the Park harmonizes summer in the city

Classical and modern, Deer Lake Park heard the dulcet tones of the VSO last weekend.

The 33rd annual Symphony in the Park event, hosted by the City of Burnaby and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at Deer Lake Park, was a hit, as guests were regaled with tunes both new and old.

The symphony played Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, selections from the musical West Side Story, film E.T.: Adventures on Earth, as well as the Coast Salish Anthem.

Activities earlier in the day included an "instrument petting zoo" where guests could sample different instruments, guided by professional musicians.

On Sunday, the Vancouver Opera also performed selections from television and movies like Bugs BunnyThe Godfather and the Simpsons. This was the inaugural year for Opera in the Park.

Deer Lake saw close to 20,000 guests across both events on the weekend with the majority of the turnout on Saturday, the city's public affairs officer Cole Wagner told the NOW.
