Plenty of fun events for Father's Day

It is Father's Day this Sunday and there are plenty of events in the city to enjoy with dad, from art exhibits to a Father's Day walk/run. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend.

It is Father's Day this Sunday and there are plenty of events in the city to enjoy with dad, from art exhibits to a Father's Day walk/run.

We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for June 14 to 16.

1 Get cycling to the Community Bike Fair, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Edmonds Community School, 7651 18th Ave. Those who bring a bike also need to bring a helmet. Flowriders will perform an exciting mountain bike show including big jumps, teeter totters and roller coasters, and will perform many more stunts.

There will be an obstacle course by Pedalheads, a "Challenge Your Friend" race, bike decorating, a kiddie bike riding area and a minor repair station.

Donate a bike/tricycle, helmet or bike parts and the Burnaby Lougheed Lions Club will use all donations to make bike presents for children in need. Call 604540-4424 to donate.

2 Get listening to literary art readings in Studio J at the Shadbolt Centre of the Arts at 6450 Deer Lake Ave. on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Students in the centre's literary arts classes come together to share and discuss their memoirs, stories and poetry. Admission is free. For more information, please call 604-291-6864.

3 Get cultured at a new exhibit, Double Zero: The Point Between Future and Past Art by Jeremy Isao Speier and Junichiro Iwase, at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre. "Speier and Iwase present contrasting minimalist esthetic approaches to social issues and popular culture. Each artist brings a unique sensibility which is grounded in their Japanese ancestry," the centre's website states. The exhibit opens Friday and runs until Sept. 1. The centre's hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4 Get laughing at Stephen Leacock's well-loved, humorous stories, as librarians read excerpts from his 1912 book, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, at the Burnaby Village Museum on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Burnaby Community Camping Bureau.

5 Get running or walking for a good cause at Burnaby Lake Park on Sunday. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of B.C. will be hosting the 15th annual Safeway Father's Day Walk/Run. There will be a barbecue, prizes and entertainment. The registration fee is $35. Go to www.walktolive.ca to register.

6 Get swimming at Burnaby's outdoor pools this weekend. All four of the city's outdoor pools opened on June 3. The Central Park pool is at 6110 Boundary Rd., the Kensington pool is at 700 Hammarskjold Dr., the McPherson pool is at 5485 Rumble St., and the Robert Burnaby pool is at 8175 Wedgewood St. The pools' schedules are subject to change during poor weather.

For up-to-date information, call 604-5704000. And of course, Burnaby's indoor pools are still open, for those not willing to brave the mid-June temperatures.
