The Amabilis Singers, seen here in a past performance, are offering up a concert, Luminosity, on May 27 at Holy Rosary Cathedral.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The Burnaby-based Amabilis Singers are performing Luminosity at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver.

DETAILS, PLEASE:

Luminosity is a rarely heard composition by British composer James Whitbourn, a 30-minute piece that explores light, love and profound truths through the texts of great spiritual writers including St. John, St. Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich and St. Isaac of Nineveh.

Whitbourn combines choral settings with Eastern and Western instruments: organ, viola, tam-tam (a percussion instrument) and tanpura (a plucked string instrument). The fusion of styles and traditions promises to be particularly remarkable in the stunning acoustic of Holy Rosary.

The program will also include a cappella works by Ramona Luengen, Frank Ticheli and Peteris Vasks.

WHO’S INVOLVED?

Amabilis is a 60-voice community choir that rehearses regularly at New Westminster Christian Reformed Church. The singers are led by artistic director Ramona Luengen. For this concert, they will be joined by Roy Campbell on organ and Beth Nickel on viola, plus special guests.

WHERE  AND WHEN?

Luminosity is on Saturday, May 27 at 8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 646 Richards St. (at Dunsmuir) in Vancouver. It’s a short walk from Granville SkyTrain station.
