SPOTLIGHT ON: Kids and Arts
WHAT’S UP?
The City of Burnaby has a variety of program offerings for artistically inclined and creative kids of all ages.
WHEN DOES IT ALL HAPPEN?
If you’re one of those parents who meant to sign your child up for an activity in the new year but just didn’t quite get around to it, there’s good news: some new program offerings are starting up in February and March, so you still have time. Here are a few highlights:
FOR THE LITTLES
Artful Duo – Parent and Me Studio Time offers budding artists aged two to five a chance to get into the studio with a parent or caregiver to explore and experiment with a variety of materials and techniques. It runs at the Burnaby Art Gallery for four Fridays, with new sessions starting up on Feb. 16 and April 13.
Adventure Passports gives the four- to six-year-old crowd a chance to take inspiration from Julie McIntyre’s current exhibition at Burnaby Art Gallery. They’ll explore visual storytelling by using photos, printmaking and stories to create their own adventure passports. It runs for four Saturdays starting Feb. 24.
FOR BIGGER KIDS
Brick Stop-Motion Animation gives children aged six to 11 a chance to create their own stop-motion animation using LEGO elements. They can create a mini-movie using LEGO sets such as Star Wars, LEGO Friends, LEGO City and more. It runs for four Wednesdays starting Feb. 21 at Bonsor Recreation Complex.
EV3 Mindstorms Robotics, for eight- to 12-year-olds, gives kids a chance to design, program and control robots and other mechanisms using the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms System. A new session runs for four Wednesdays starting Feb. 21 at Bonsor Recreation Centre.
Coding with Scratch Software is a new program for nine- to 11-year-olds who are already familiar with basic coding concepts. They can create their own animated story or game. A new session runs four Wednesdays starting Feb. 14 at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
