A Newfoundland-based theatre company is bringing its newest work to the stage in Burnaby.

Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland presents Between Breaths, onstage from March 25 to 28 at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

The production is based on the life of Dr. Jon Lien, well-known in Newfoundland as the Whale Man. Lien pioneered techniques for rescuing whales trapped in fishing nets, often risking his life in the water with the frightened animals.

Despite his risky work, Lien’s biggest fight came at the hands of a lengthy illness as his body was slowly conquered over eight years by progressing immobility and dementia.

Between Breaths jumps backwards in time, from the final moments of Lien’s life – in a wheelchair and dealing with brain damage – to his first whale intervention.

“As his life becomes increasingly confined, his mind stretches itself through memories of release and salvation,” says a press release.

Tickets are $36 regular, or $15 for youth, with special $15 pricing for all seats on Wednesday night. Buy through tickets.shadboltcentre.com or call 604-205-3000.

Shadbolt Centre is at 6450 Deer Lake Ave.
