The days are getting shorter, but we’ve got lots of ways to fill them. We’re continuing with our popular feature – our staff’s Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here’s our Top 5 list for Oct. 18 to 20.
1 Get to know dementia, at an introductory session on Saturday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Metrotown, 4405 Central Blvd. This session reviews information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and the challenges of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will learn about the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey and how to begin planning for the future. People with a diagnosis of dementia, care partners and family members are all invited to attend. This session is not recommended for the general public. Pre-registration is required. Please call 604-298-0780. For more information, go to www.alzheimerbc.org/News-and-Events/Events/2013/Getting-to-Know-Burnaby-Oct.aspx.
2 Get craft shopping at the CWL Bazaar at St. Francis de Sales Church basement, 6610 Balmoral St. on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This year’s bazaar has an area dedicated to crafters with wool, crochet yarn, embroidery floss, transfers, patterns, etc.
3 Get a plan with a special free event for students who are confused about life after high school, puzzled about what post-secondary faculty to enroll in and those who don’t know their financial aid options.
The Tian-Jin Community is hosting a free information session on Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 3426 Smith Ave. to help with these decisions. Light refreshments will be provided. Seats are limited, so call 604-568-9880 to reserve.
4 Get sipping at the fall-themed celebration tea for seniors at the Confederation Seniors Centre at 4585 Albert St. from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Enjoy an afternoon of light refreshments, great company and an entertaining musical performance by Peter Paulus. The event is a special event committee fundraiser, so there are no refunds.
Early registration is required. Call 604-294-1936 to reserve Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $7 for Confederation Seniors members and $8 for senior guests. The reservation barcode is 308068.
