Top young musicians on stage this weekend

Vancouver Youth Symphony concert features concerto competition winners

Some of the top young musical talent in the region will take centre stage at a concert offered by the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 26.

The concert, set for 7: 30 p.m. at the Michael J. Fox Theatre, will feature the winners of the senior orchestra concerto competition.

The featured soloists are cellist Tate Zawadiuk, violinist Chan Lee, flutist Katherine Kim and oboist Michelle Feng.

The winners will each perform one movement of a concerto with the senior orchestra, directed by Roger Cole.

Zawadiuk, who has appeared as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic, will perform the Elgar Cello Concerto.

Lee, the youngest recipient of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada Award of Excellence and the laureate winner of the international Yuri Yankelevich Violin Competition in 2009, will perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

Feng, who captured first place in the 2012 Vancouver Academy of Music Senior Secondary Competition for Winds and Brass, will play Vaughan Williams' Oboe Concerto.

Lee, who has captured numerous awards and won many competitions across the country, will perform Borne's Carmen Fantasia for flute and orchestra.
