Urban gardens in focus at new art exhibitions

Burnaby’s urban gardens are in focus at three new off-site exhibitions by Burnaby Art Gallery.

The art gallery is presenting the Growing Season exhibitions at the Burnaby Public Library’s Bob Prittie and McGill branches, as well as at Stride Studios at Burnaby Village Museum.

All three feature the work of urban farmer and photographer Ward Teulon. Teulon, who was born and raised on a farm, studied agriculture and worked as a professional agrologist. He has been designing, building and maintaining food gardens since 2007.

“Growing Season features the inventive structures of Burnaby’s urban gardens, their bountiful harvests and their busy pollinators,” a press release says. “Join us in celebrating Burnaby’s locally grown vegetables, fruits and herbs at three different Burnaby locations.”

At the Bob Prittie (Metrotown) library branch, at 6100 Willingdon Ave., visitors can check out the Summer’s Bounty exhibition. The exhibition runs June 8 to Aug. 9. At the McGill branch, at 4595 Albert St. in North Burnaby, it’s Close Up in the Garden, running June 9 to Aug. 10. At the Burnaby Village Museum’s Stride Studios, visitors can enjoy Bees and Berries, running June 18 to Sept. 2.

A garden party and artist talk is set for Saturday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. Running at Burnaby Village Museum, the event will include a tour of the backyard garden displays and photo exhibits, along with live music and refreshments. Teulon will be on hand, as will representatives from the Burnaby and Region Allotment Garden Association and other local urban farmers.
