For more than a quarter of a century, local audiences have been able to enjoy the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra right here at home – in one of the best outdoor settings the Lower Mainland has to offer.
Deer Lake Park once again plays host to the free Symphony in the Park concert on Sunday, July 10 at 7 p.m.
The orchestra, under the baton of Tania Miller, will perform popular classics including Johann Strauss’s Radetzky March, John Williams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Michael Giacchino’s Star Trek: Into Darkness Suite and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovksy’s 1812 Overture.
Each year, the concert – now in its 27th year - features an up-and-coming musician. This year, it’s cellist Albert Seo, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. The 18-year-old is no stranger to the stage, having been featured as a soloist with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and having captured awards at a number of high-level competitions. He has been accepted in to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music.
Along with the concert, the event features a family area presented by Westminster Savings. Families can stop in and take part in art activities, hat making and more.
The family area activities start at 4 p.m., and the music starts at 7 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring their blankets and arrive early to stake a spot on the lawn for the music.
