Spring may finally have sprung in Burnaby - and the new season has brought plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and enjoy activities of all kinds. We're continuing with our popular feature, Top 5 things To Do This Weekend, and offer up these suggestions for April 4 to 6:
1. Get arty at Fresh Paint, the Burnaby Artists' Guild spring exhibition and sale, at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, 6450 Deer Lake Ave. The show runs Friday 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The featured artist is Elizabeth Wallace, and the show will also include work by the guild's many talented artists in a variety of styles and mediums. Demonstrations will be offered. Admission is free. Call 604-291-6864 or see www.burnabyartistsguild.com for more details.
2. Check out the new exhibition, Jesse Nishihata - Visual Storyteller, at the National Nikkei Museum and Cultural Centre, 6688 Southoaks Cres. The retrospective of the work of the pioneering Japanese Canadian filmmaker opened on April 2 and is on until May 4. Admission is by donation. The centre is open Friday 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Info: www.nikkeiplace.org or 604-777-7000.
3. Enjoy the innovative dance work of Shay Kuebler when Karoshi comes to the stage at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. It's on one final time on Friday, April 4 in the Studio Theatre, at 8 p.m. As a write-up about the show says: "From the stifling confines of the world of the white collar office worker, six virtuosic performers reveal the internal chaos in a society where protocol and format out-weigh personal fulfillment and freedom. Anything can happen, and it does so - if you've ever wanted to throw your computer through a window, this is the show for you!" For tickets, see tickets.shadboltcentre.com.
4. Get out and enjoy Burnaby Lake Park. If you're interested, Metro Vancouver is hosting an interpretive skills workshop at the park on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., designed for novice and experienced park interpreters to explore the elements of a well-planned program. Advance registration is required. For more information: www.metrovancouveronline.org, 604-432-6359, use barcode 5596. And even if the workshop isn't for you, why not stop by the park anyway? With the 10-km loop trail around the lake, plus the wildlife viewing platform at Piper Spit, it's a beautiful place to enjoy the weather and check out the city's bird and animal life.
5. Gather the grandkids and head out for the Bunny Breakfast at Confederation Community Centre on Sunday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. Enjoy a pancake breakfast and celebrate Easter with loved ones. Children must be accompanied by a grandparent - mom and dad are also welcome to attend. Registration is required - call 604-297-4812. Confederation Centre is at 4585 Albert St. in North Burnaby.
