It is a weekend to remember in Burnaby. We’re continuing with our popular feature – our staff’s Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here’s our list for Nov. 8 to 11.
1. Get shopping early at A Market with Heart, the fourth annual pre-Christmas market at South Burnaby United Church hall, 7591 Gray Ave., on Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. Do some early Christmas shopping while you improve the lives of thousands. Gift items and treats being sold to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation – Grandmothers to Grandmothers, Ten Thousand Villages, fair trade and socially conscious local organizations, and many more eco-friendly vendors.
2. Get honouring Canada’s veterans a couple of days early at a Remembrance Day service at the Edmonds Community Centre at 7433 Edmonds St. on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Join the service honouring the men and women who served in wartimes. For more information, call 604-297-4838.
3. Get creative with the family at the Burnaby Art Gallery’s family program in connection with the Storms and Bright Skies: Three Centuries of Dutch Landscapes and Inner Realms: Dutch Portraits exhibitions at the gallery. Drop-in, no registration required, activities on the half-hour from 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave. For more information, go to www.burnabyartgallery.ca.
4. Get into Vancouver to check out some Burnaby talent at the Circle Craft Christmas Market. Douglas Ballet Academy dancers are performing on Sunday at 5 p.m., and local vendors are among the 300 exhibitors. The market takes place at the Vancouver Convention Centre – West. Among the exhibitors this year is Burnaby’s RoseHip Hat Studio (www.rosehiphats.com), with hats made with vintage textiles and earthy fibres. The market is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 regular or $10 for seniors and students; children under 12 are free. 5. Get attending one of the Remembrance Day ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 11. The South Burnaby parade begins at 10:30 a.m. from Royal Canadian Legion branch No. 83, 5289 Grimmer St. The ceremony at the South Burnaby cenotaph in Bonsor Park begins at 11 a.m. The North Burnaby begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Safeway parking lot at 4440 Hastings St. The ceremony at the North Burnaby cenotaph in Confederation Park begins at 10:45 a.m.
6. Get skating after the ceremony at the Remembrance Day loonie skate at Kensington Recreation Complex, at 6159 Curtis St. The event is on Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $1 per person, but free for children three years and younger. The ratio of children to adults must not be greater than three to one. Skates and helmets are included in the admission fee, but skating bars are not available during loonie skates.
