A survey circulating through the Burnaby business community hopes to find out how B.C.’s “misaligned” Family Day affects businesses.

B.C.’s Family Day holiday, first observed back in 2012, falls on the second Monday in February, unlike other provinces, including Ontario and Alberta, and the United States where it falls on the third Monday of February.

In February, the Burnaby Board of Trade released a statement calling on the province to align B.C.’s Family Day holiday with that of neighbouring provinces and the U.S. In the statement, board of trade president and CEO Paul Holden said B.C.’s chosen date has shown to negatively impact business operations.

Now, the local board of trade has partnered with the Surrey Board of Trade to gather further details on the impact of B.C.’s misaligned holiday. The boards are hoping to find out how their members feel about the holiday and whether it’s a cause worth pursuing.

Among others, questions in the survey include: on Family Day, did anyone in your business or organization have to work or deal with customers from outside of B.C. where there was no holiday? Do you suspect (or know definitively) that your organization lost opportunities because of B.C.’s misaligned holiday?

While the survey is currently circulating amongst the Burnaby and Surrey boards of trade members, Burnaby is inviting non-member business owners to participate. To take part in the survey, go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/BCFamilyDay.
