A Burnaby-based tutoring company has been recognized by the Better Business Bureau for its outstanding business practices at a recent awards gala.

School Is Easy Tutoring received the People’s Pick and Marketplace Excellence (small) awards at the 2018 Torch Awards presented by the Better Business Bureau.

Held June 7, the annual awards recognize excellence in the B.C. business community and aim to build awareness about the importance of ethical business practices and create exposure for services and programs offered by the Better Business Bureau, according to a write-up on its website.

The People’s Pick award was given to School Is Easy for having the most consumer recognition online. The Marketplace Excellence award, meanwhile, recognizes School Is Easy for demonstrating excellence when it comes to the business bureau standards, noted a press release from the company.

“It’s the tutors that own these awards. They are on the frontline every day representing School Is Easy. They are dedicated. They love the kids. They really care,” said School Is Easy founder Susan Cumberland in the release.

Cumberland started the tutoring company in 2002 and began franchising the business in 2009. Last year, she sold the company to Launchlife International, a Canadian education tech company. She still owns and operates her original franchise in Burnaby.

Three other Burnaby businesses were also finalists in this year’s Torch Awards. FG Artificial Suppliers was one of four companies in the running for the Green Award while Blue Ocean Construction Inc. and Milani Plumbing, Drainage & Heating were up for Marketplace Excellence (large).
