Businesses take the green pledge in Burnaby

The Burnaby Board of Trade is ramping up its pledge for a sustainable community initiative, which kicks off in May at a forum on the subject.

The sustainability initiative is an online resource designed to help businesses reduce their environmental impact while promoting their business, according to a media release.

On May 1, the Board of Trade is hosting its sustainability and business forum and the pledge will officially launch then.

The forum will feature Vancity CEO Tamara Vrooman and sustainability expert Coro Strandberg who will speak on leadership and profitability in a sustainable business.

"We're very excited about the program for this year's forum," said Paul Holden, the board's president and CEO, in a media release. "Vancity is a great leader and role model in corporate environmental sustainability, and so hearing from Tamara Vrooman should be very enlightening."

The pledge initiative has had more than 70 businesses commit to it since its soft launch late last year. The first business to pledge was Electronic Arts Canada.

"At Electronic Arts we take environmental stewardship seriously, not only because we want to be good corporate citizens, but because it also make good business sense," said Frank Bassett, EA's senior director of facilities and corporate services.

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan will also speak at the event, discussing the city's environmental sustainability strategy.

The forum will take place at Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre from 11: 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to register, visit bbot.ca.
