At a July luncheon, Coast Mountain received the top award in the emission control category.

The Environmental Management Awards recognize the valuable work carried out by its member firms within the environmental industry in B.C.

Nominated projects were judged in five categories: site remediation, emission control, technological innovation, regulatory challenge, and organizational environmental programs.

The other winners were: Tervita Corporation in the site remediation category; Exova in the technological innovation category; ALS Environmental in the regulatory challenge category; and Hemmera in the organizational environmental programs category.

Each winner will have the opportunity to display the EMA Cup at their company office for a portion of the year. Smaller trophies and plaques were also presented to the winners.

Cotto Enoteca

The long-anticipated opening of a new restaurant in Burnaby occurred on July 30.

Alex Tung put the final touches on Cotto Enoteca Pizzeria at 6011 Hastings St. and announced via social media that his restaurant opened on July 30.

The former site of Anducci's burned down recently and Tung has taken over the Capitol Hill site and is bringing in an il forno wood-fired oven to make authentic Neapolitan pizza.

Tung, the executive chef and managing partner of the restaurant, will also have Italian dishes on the menu.

According to the restaurant's Facebook page, staff were trained throughout

July and select media tastings took place, along with a soft opening. But at 11: 30 a.m. on July 30, the restaurant was fully open and wowing diners.

ENERGY TEAM

Burnaby-based Associated Engineering announced the appointment of two new members to their energy team.

Ruben Arellano joined as a practice leader for district energy and will lead planning and design of district energy systems.

Rachel Bolongaro joined as a renewable energy specialist and project manager.

Arellano is a professional geological engineer with more than 13 years of experience in renewable energy and environmental projects. He has extensive expertise in geological engineering assessment, testing, design, and construction of geoexchange systems, as well as directuse geothermal resources.

Bolongaro has more than 14 years of experience in the design and operation of renewable energy systems, specializing in geoexchange design. She has completed feasibility assessments, design, environmental and safety risk assessments, and operation of district energy and geoexchange systems.

TECH COMPETITION

Warranty Life, a webbased purchase-tracking company, and ZellChip, a medical testing technology company, both located in Burnaby, have reached the third round of the 12th Annual BCIC-New Ventures Competition, one of North America's largest technology business idea competitions.

On Sept. 4, the top 10 contestants will advance to the final round, with the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of experts for a chance at a share of more than $230,000 in prizes.

Warranty Life helps consumers track their purchases via a web-based site. With a database of more than two million products, they provide free access to manuals, manufacturer/extended warranty information and service support data all in one central place. Warranty Life is an open platform to retailers, consumers and warranty companies with growing partnerships in the U.S. and Canada.

ZellChip's vision is to be a leading innovator and provider of analytical testing devices, bringing the market valued, life-bettering and life-enabling research and diagnostics technology. Their innovations include the single cell chip and bioanalyzer, built in collaboration with Simon Fraser University. Their technology holds potential in opening multiple avenues to personalized medicine, including tests on liquid blood biopsies.

The BCIC-New Ventures Competition is one of North America's largest technology business idea competitions, with a first prize of $100,000 and secondary prizes ranging from $10,000 to $55,000.

The competition attracts applicants from a wide range of industries including cleantech, digital media, Internet, information technology and life sciences.

GIVING BACK

Rosanna Marano's Burnaby-based salon, Salon M2, is continuing to do good things for the community.

For the past two years, Salon M2 has raised money for the snack program administered by Burnaby firefighters for children in need.

This year, the salon's efforts will be going to Down Syndrome Research Foundation.

Salon M2 will be attending the annual Kensington Community Fair on Aug. 11. They will have some amazing items for sale, and they are offering free bang trims. People can also spin the wheel to win a prize. Each time a spin lands on a $$ sign, Salon M2 will donate $1 to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation. For more information, go to www. mysalonm2.com.
