A new fast food franchise is in town, but instead of serving up the same old burgers and French fries, it's targeting guilt-free eating of healthy food.

HealthFare opened its doors Feb. 28 on Marine Drive at Marine Way Market Crossing. It offers gluten-free and vegan choices on its menu, which also features calorie-marked items that were designed in collaboration between chefs and dieticians.

"We've taken the convenience of fast food and built it into a healthy and eco-friendly experience," said Mark Bakker, HealthFare's owner, in a press release. "HealthFare is about helping you live a healthy lifestyle in the easiest, quickest and tastiest way."

In 2008, Bakker wanted to fill the gap between fast-food convenience and healthy lifestyle choices. The first HealthFare opened in Edmonton that year.

Now there are two locations in Calgary and three more will be opening this year in Metro Vancouver.

"We're not about diets or trends," Bakker said. "We are about creating a healthy, tasty, guilt-free food culture that is a part of the lifestyle you want to have."

The new franchise owner, Jenny Saini, said she's excited to bring the eatery to the West Coast.

"I'm looking forward to spreading the HealthFare culture to B.C.," Saini said. "It's an exciting addition to healthy eating in Greater Vancouver."

"The restaurant is complete with BMW-designed all-recycled material chairs, décor pieces made from reclaimed wood, Japanese kirei board, 100 per cent recycled wood ceilings and a marmoleum flooring made with natural and renewable agreements," the release states.

The restaurant also offers smoothies, rice bowls, non-processed meat sandwiches, salads and wraps.

Besides the eat-in or take-out menu, HealthFare offers vegan nutritional supplements and specialty bottled beverages - such as all-natural coconut water and fruit-infused waters.
