Leadership award goes to local university

Simon Fraser University is one of 11 finalists in the leadership excellence category of B.C. Hydro's Power Smart Excellence Awards for 2012.

B.C. Hydro recently announced 42 businesses and individuals as finalists for the bi-annual awards which recognize best-inclass energy conservation leadership and innovation from Hydro customers in commercial, government, and industrial sectors, as well as retail and industry partners.

There are 11 award categories: Power Smart Leader; Leadership Excellence; Energy Conservation Commitment; Energy Manager; New Construction; Conservation Partner; New Technology; Consumer Product Manufacturer; National Retailer; Regional Retailer; and the Larry Bell Award for Advancing Energy Conservation. This is the ninth time awards will be given out.

The awards recognize B.C. businesses and individuals for their continued efforts toward energy efficiency and serve as an inspiration to other businesses to step up and make their own commitments to conservation.

GET GOLFING

The Burnaby Board of Trade is gearing up for its annual golf tournament, being held on Sept. 5 in support of the Burnaby Hospice Society.

The board is looking for people or organizations who wish to donate a prize for the charity raffle at this year's tournament.

Popular prizes in the past have included gift certificates, electronics, special event tickets, golf accessories and gift baskets.

BIZ STUDENTS

The Burnaby Board of Trade is also looking for applicants for a student career development program. Applications are now being accepted for the program, which is intended to help people new to the workforce form valuable connections in the Burnaby business community and gain access to useful tools and seminars which can help jumpstart a career. To join, you must be: 32 years of age or younger; in your final year or graduating from a postsecondary or graduate program; reside in the Greater Vancouver area during the program duration; be able to fulfill the requirements within your enrolment year of the program; and have aspirations for, or experience in, leadership roles in the community.

The Access: Student Career Development Program is a unique career development program that provides graduating students with the connections and tools they need to compete in the job market. FUNDING COMING

A Burnaby energy company is receiving $142,575 from the provincial government. Burnaby-based Diacarbon Energy Inc. is receiving the money toward its goal of converting agricultural wastes such as anaerobic digestate, poultry litter and spent mushroom substrate into biocoal.

This investment is provided under Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial agreement.

The Canada-B.C. AgriInnovation Program supports projects that lead to innovation and enhanced profitability and competitiveness, both on-farm and throughout the rest of the supply chain.

BUILDING AWARDS

One Burnaby project and three Burnaby companies are winners in the Vancouver Regional Construction Association's annual Awards of Excellence Silver Award competition.

The UniverCity Childcare Centre at SFU has won a silver award in the Sustainable Construction Award category.

Burnaby-based Houle Electric Ltd. is nominated twice in the Electrical Contractor up to $2 million category, while Trotter and Morton Building Technologies Inc. is nominated in the Mechanical Contractor up to $3 million category.

Mott Electric General Partnership, recently featured in a Burnaby NOW story on Aug. 8, is nominated in the Electrical Contractor over $2 million category.

"The silver award winners are true leaders in the industry," Keith Sashaw, Vancouver Regional Construction Association president said in a press release. "They all represent companies that were able to bring projects of the highest calibre in on time and on budget."

The total number of entrants and projects considered in this year's competition rose from 218 entrants and 43 projects in 2011 to 267 entrants and 67 projects in 2012.

The 2012 competition also features two projects that have achieved the Living Building Challenge Standard certification, a new international standard in sustainability.

One of those is the Burnaby-based UniverCity Child-care Centre at SFU, with the second being the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre.

The 24th annual awards of excellence gold award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Oct.

17 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

LOGISTICAL PLAN

Burnaby-based Kelron Logistics has been sold to XPO Logistics for $8 million. Kelron, a logistics business, has approximately 50 employees in Burnaby, and partners with thousands of truck drivers.

XPO is aiming to triple the size of Kelron over the next five years. XPO Logistics is led by chairman and chief executive officer Brad Jacobs, who founded and built United Rentals and United Waste Systems through acquisitions into multi-billiondollar businesses.

He acquired a majority stake in XPO last year and is focused on using the company as a platform to consolidate the fragmented trucking industry and build another multi-billion-dollar business within the next several years.
