A local non-profit initiative is celebrating its fourth anniversary next month.

Connections Coffee House, run by volunteers and backed by a local church, was established to create a sense of community. The café is located at 5063 Anola Dr.

Sue From, one of about 55 volunteers with the coffee house, often provides the NOW with tips on local businesses. The last Movers and Shakers column stated she runs the café, which is incorrect.

“We are all dedicated community-oriented volunteers, with a passion to bring the community together to meet their neighbours,” From wrote in an email to the NOW. “I am only one of many who have been there on a regular shift for almost four years.”

The NOW apologizes for the error.

Mouth watering festival next month

Urban Digs is celebrating bacon next month at the sixth annual Baconfest.

The event includes a variety of dishes that all include bacon, craft beer and spirits, a farm market, and a chance to visit the animals on site, according to Urban Digs’ website.

The event takes place at the farm on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 10:30 p.m.

Admission is free for members of the farm’s CSA, and $5 for non-members online (or $10 at the door, if there are still tickets available). The tickets do not include food and drink – those are charged separately.

For more information or to buy tickets, go to www.urbandigsfarm.com/pages/baconfest.

Construction Award winners announced

Two Burnaby companies are silver award winners in the Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s annual Awards of Excellence, according to a press release from the association.

Pacific Blasting and Demolition won for its work on the Sears redevelopment at Pacific Centre, and Houle Electric won for its work on the Wood Innovation and Design Centre.

The two businesses are among those selected within 12 project categories “for their use of innovative techniques, new materials and/or exceptional project management,” the release stated.

Each is one of three businesses in each category, and one of the silver winners in each category will be a gold award winner at the association’s Awards of Excellence event on Oct. 21 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

4,984 Pirate Paks sold at white spots in city

Pirate Pak Day has been and gone, and the annual event raised a lot of cash for a worthy cause.

In total, 46,179 Pirate Paks were sold on Aug. 12, with $2 from each pack going to the Zajac Ranch so kids and young adults with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities can go to summer camp, according to a press release from White Spot.

There were 4,984 Pirate Paks sold at the five White Spots in Burnaby – at 7519 Market Crossing, 4075 North Rd., 5550 Kingsway, 6500 Hastings St. and 4129 Lougheed Hwy. In all, this year’s initiative raised $92,358 for the charity, according to the release, and has raised $439,530 since it began in 2008.

White Spot Week takes place at the Zajac Ranch from Aug. 17 to 21.

BBOT boat tours proving popular

The two boat tours offered by the Burnaby Board of Trade are hot ticket items, it seems.

The board’s website asks that board members only register for one of the two tours; either the tour of the Fraser or the tour of Burrard Inlet.

For more information, go to the events page on the board’s website at bbot.ca.
