Send your taste buds travelling in your own backyard with the help of Tourism Burnaby’s Passport to Food.

The local challenge, which runs until Sept. 30, encourages residents to try at least 10 different restaurants in the city.

Passports are being sent to 40,000 homes in Burnaby, according to Tourism Burnaby’s executive director, Nancy Small, and can also be printed from the Tourism Burnaby website.

For each food and beverage purchase of $10 or more, residents will get their passports stamped at participating restaurants.

Those who collect 10 stamps from 10 different restaurants can enter to win a “staycation” grand prize, according to the website.

The 16 participating restaurants include Anton’s Pasta Bar, Club Ilia Eatery and Lounge, Great Bear Pub, Hart House Restaurant and Trattoria Burnaby.

High tea sushi with Burnaby’s mayor

For those looking to rub elbows with the city’s political elite, the Burnaby Board of Trade is holding a special high tea event in honour of the 50 year anniversary of Burnaby’s sister city relationship with Kushiro, Japan.

The high tea is being held on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Mayor Derek Corrigan will be on hand to make a presentation on the sister city relationship.

Fine dining on the water

If you’re looking for a swanky dining opportunity outdoors, consider Deer Lake Park on Aug. 27.

Tourism Burnaby is organizing the inaugural Small Plates on the Lake event at the park, with chefs from Hart House Restaurant, Reflect Social Dining and Lounge, and ebo Restaurant offering a variety of small plates.

The event also includes a live jazz band, according to Tourism Burnaby’s website. Tickets are $55 each.

Paddle around with the Burnaby Board of Trade

The Burnaby Board of Trade is holding its own swanky event on Aug. 27.

The board, along with fellow Metro Vancouver chamber members from Delta, New Westminster and Richmond, is offering members the chance to tour the Fraser River on a paddlewheeler boat. The event is co-hosted by Port Metro Vancouver, with information on its operations provided during the tour, according to an email from the board.

The event takes place from 2 to 4 p.m., with the boat departing from New Westminster Quay. The cost is $15 and the event is only for board members.

A two-hour tour

The Burnaby Board of Trade is holding another event with Port Metro Vancouver – a tour of Burrard Inlet on Sept. 1.

The tour includes a look at the port’s major marine terminals in the inlet from the Lion’s Gate Bridge to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, according to an email from the board.

The tour is being conducted with chambers of commerce from New Westminster, North Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and the Tri-Cities.

The event takes place from 2 to 4 p.m., with the boat departing from the Westin Bayshore Marina in Vancouver. The cost is $15 and the event is for board members only.
