The winning design for the seventh annual gingerbread house contest held during the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Christmas luncheon was made by the Burnaby NOW sales team. It was inspired by Burnaby’s 125th anniversary.

Do something good this holiday season – fill a stocking for Plush Floral Studio’s annual stuff-a-stocking campaign.

People can pick up empty stockings at the studio at 3978 Hastings St., according to Mandy Karpoff at Plush.

Folks will then be responsible for filling the stocking with some much-needed items, including warm gloves, hats and socks, personal hygiene essentials, lip balm, snacks and candy. And you can add any other items you’d like, Karpoff said.

Even a note can be greatly appreciated, she added.

The filled stockings must be returned to Plush by Christmas Eve. They will be delivered to people on the downtown eastside on Christmas Day. Last year, 400 filled stockings were delivered.

Developer makes donation

Burnaby Neighbourhood House received a valuable gift last month to help continue its Friendship Club at Maywood Community School.

Belford Properties, the developer behind the Sun Towers project in Metrotown, donated $15,000 to Burnaby Neighbourhood House. The money will be used as a sponsorship for the Friendship Club, which is a much-needed after-school program, according to a press release from the developer.

The program offers after-school programs three days a week for kids in grades 2 to 7, with a focus on arts one day and a focus on sports and cooking the others.

Kids are referred to the free program through the school and include children who struggle with settlement, academics, social and behavioural issues, according to the release.

Get involved

Looking to get more involved in the inner workings of the board of trade?

- Environmental sustainability team, which develops the board’s environmental sustainability efforts and activities through events, programs and government policy development;

- Membership team, which comes up with new ways to maximize the value of a board membership;

- Social development team, which fosters social responsibility and awareness of community issues, and develops board positions on social issues.

- Pacific gateway team, which facilitates connections between the board and the Asia-Pacific business community locally and abroad.

- Women’s business success network, which provides a platform for collaboration and relationship building and advocating for policies that advance and support women in business.

A win for the NOW

Congrats to the sales staff at the Burnaby NOW for taking home top prize in the seventh annual gingerbread house contest.

The team managed to unseat last year’s winner, the board of trade’s women’s business success network, with a design inspired by Burnaby’s 125th anniversary.

The competition was organized by the Burnaby Board of Trade at its Christmas luncheon, held on Friday at the SFU Diamond Alumni Centre. The event was in support of the Burnaby Christmas Bureau, and folks were encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys for donation.
