Movers & Shakers: Recycling company raises money for United Way

Things got a little messy at a Burnaby recycling facility recently. The folks over at ABC Recycling kicked off their annual United Way workplace campaign on Nov. 3 with a special pie-in-the-face event.

David Yochlowitz, CEO of ABC Recycling, agreed to shave his head if his team raised $1,000 during its kick-off fundraiser event for its United Way workplace campaign. Well, they reached their target and Yochlowitz’s head was shaved.

Things got a little messy at a Burnaby recycling facility recently.

The folks over at ABC Recycling kicked off their annual United Way workplace campaign on Nov. 3 with a special pie-in-the-face event. The fundraiser was meant to get employees “revved up for the launch,” Karen Bichin, community relations manager for ABC Recycling, wrote in an email.

For $5, employees could buy a pie made entirely of whipped cream and “smush” it into the face of one of the company’s senior managers.

And the fun didn’t stop there. CEO David Yochlowitz made a deal with his team that if they managed to raise $1,000 during the event, he would shave his head – well, they reached their target, and last week Yochlowitz shaved his head.

All the money raised will be donated to United Way as part of ABC’s workplace campaign.

There’s a new toy store in town

Burnaby’s newest toy store is hosting its grand opening celebration this weekend.

Candy Apple Toy Company, at 4415 Hastings St., hopes to become a destination for toys in the city. It offers free play toys, mainstream and specialty toys, and educational toys. I checked out its website and if you’re looking for classic wooden building blocks and the like, they’ve got you covered.

Grand opening events kick-off Friday, Nov. 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. On Saturday, Princess Rapunzel will be stopping by for a visit from 12:30 to 2 p.m. followed by a visit by Princess Elsa on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Candice Brown, the owner of the new shop, has planned a bunch of other fun activities for the whole family, including daily giveaways and prizes, a magician and snacks and refreshments, so be sure to stop by. For details, go to www.candyappletoycompany.com.

Welcome to Burnaby, Candice!

Donations being accepted

If you’re planning a trip to Metropolis at Metrotown in the coming weeks, pencil in a visit to the Body Shop.

The purveyor of soaps, lotions and beauty products has partnered with Burnaby Family Life to collect donations for the organization’s Christmas campaign. All you have to do is donate your favourite Body Shop product. Burnaby Family Life will then give them to people in need during its Christmas initiative.
