After nine months of analysis, the Burnaby Board of Trade has released its review of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, raising concerns with environmental safety, tax revenue and communication.

The field of Burnaby businesses in the running for Burnaby Business Excellence Awards narrowed on Thursday when the board of trade announced the finalists in each category.

The annual awards recognizes local companies for outstanding work both in the business community and the community at-large. There are nine categories up for grabs, including the coveted Business Person of the Year and Business of the Year awards.

On Thursday, Burnaby Board of Trade president and CEO Paul Holden announced the finalists in all categories at the annual board of trade Business Hall of Fame luncheon, held at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.

Standout nominees include Watson Gloves, whose president, Martin Moore was nominated for Businessperson of the Year. Moore started with the company in 1986 and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming president in 1997.

Watson Gloves was also nominated for Business of the Year and Business Innovation.

LMI Technologies, meanwhile, was nominated for Healthy Workplace and Business Innovation. The company, which has been in operation since 1998, moved to Burnaby’s Glenlyon Parkway earlier this year. LMI specializes in developing and manufacturing 3D scanners that provide clients with data needed for quality control operations.

Also receiving a nomination was Peter Legge, CEO of Canada Wide Media.

“It’s just amazing the wealth of fantastic companies that we have here in Burnaby,” Holden told the crowd.

The awards, however, are not only for the business community. Five local non-profits are up for the annual Not-for-Profit Organization of the Year award. The nominees include: Burnaby Neighbourhood House; CMHA Echo Clubhouse; Down Syndrome Research Foundation; MOSAIC; and Strive Living Society.

The winners in all categories will be announced at the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards gala on Thursday, Nov. 2, also at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.
