A BBC TV host went for a dive in Burnaby recently while filming a new adventure show.

Andy Torbet was fitted with an Atmosphere Diving System (ADS) Hardsuit developed by Burnaby company OceanWorks International for use by military and commercial operations.

The suit, which looks like a large metal exoskeleton, allows the operator to dive up to 2,000 feet below the water (in military situations) while maintaining clear voice communication. It’s also designed to provide unlimited vertical movement without worrying about decompression and does not require the operator to decompress before resurfacing, according to OceanWorks.

Torbet, along with help from ADS program manager Jonathan Fether, was outfitted in a Hardsuit and dropped into a test tank at the Burnaby facility, where he had to complete a series of challenges while on camera.

The footage will be used for a new BBC adventure show called Beyond Bionic, which premieres later this month.
