Students win

Four local students had their achievements rewarded last month.

Alice Yue received the $5,000 Standing Tall Award for her achievements in the face of a personal challenge, according to a press release from Coast Capital.

"I can't express how thankful I am to be recognized with an education award from Coast Capital Savings," Yue said in the release. "I know there were many deserving applicants this year, and to be among such outstanding recipients is a huge honour."

Yue volunteered at Byrne Creek Secondary's 30-hour famine and participated in math week and provincewide science competitions, according to the release, and is pursuing an education in health information science at the University of Victoria.

Mikayla Louie, Aliya Dossa and Elyse Gawley each received Citizenship Awards of $2,000 from Coast Capital Savings for their efforts at managing school, personal activities and community involvement, the release stated.

The credit union received nearly 1,000 applications, according to the release.

Team effort

Two businesses profiled in the Burnaby NOW teamed up last month on a promotional venture.

The Community Savings Credit Union, which opened its Hastings Street branch in April, had ads printed on napkins that went to local restaurants, according to an email from Kirsten Allen, marketing coordinator for the credit union.

The ad space was provided via Ads on Naps, a Burnaby advertising company.

The credit union's napkins were distributed at Akira Sushi, King Mahal Restaurant, Cristos Greek Taverna, Romana Pizza, Sfinaki Greek Taverna, X-Site Grill and Bistro, La Villetta Ristorante, Burgers Etc. and Oscar's Pub, according to the email.
