A Burnaby intersection will benefit from provincial funding in hopes of increasing driver awareness and improving access to Royal Oak Skytrain station.

The city has been granted $10,000 to upgrade an existing crosswalk with a median divider to a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at the intersection of Nelson Avenue and Victory Street.

The province says more than $1 million has been distributed to 59 B.C. communities through Vision Zero grants.

Projects include improved crosswalk infrastructure, traffic calming, speed limit reduction pilots, speed reader boards, improved lighting, road safety planning and more.

"Vision Zero grants are making roads in rural, remote and Indigenous communities safer for everyone who relies on them for school, work or to visit family," Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said in a news release.

"Projects like improved crosswalks, traffic-calming measures and safety planning help prevent dangerous driving, giving people confidence and keeping communities safely connected."

The money is courtesy of B.C.'s health and transportation ministries, as well as Fraser Health, as communities could apply for a maximum of $20,000 each.
