Firefighters helped to evacuate 18 North Burnaby homes Wednesday night because of a natural gas leak.

A resident called Fortis B.C. to report a smell of rotten eggs at around 6:30 p.m.

A technician sent to the scene determined another company working on a sewer line had punctured a gas line in the laneway behind 4060 Eton St.

The Burnaby fire department was called in at about 9:20 p.m. to help evacuate homes in the 4000 blocks of Eton and Cambridge streets, according to assistant fire Chief Gavin Summer.

Residents were taken by bus to the Confederation Park Community Centre for about two-and-a-half hours until the line was capped at about 1 a.m.

“We just stood by until the leak was contained by Fortis and then the residents were able to return,” Summers told the NOW.

Natural gas presents a danger of fire and explosion, he said, but there were no injuries during the incident.
