5-hour police standoff at Burnaby hotel ends in mental-health arrest

Man throwing items off hotel balcony sparks response from police, tactical officers, fire department

A five-hour police standoff at a Burnaby hotel ended in a man being taken into custody under the Mental Health Act Tuesday night.

Police were called to the Executive Suites Hotel at 4201 Lougheed Hwy. at about 3 p.m. for a “man in crisis,” according to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

At the hotel, officers found a man throwing things off the balcony onto the ground below.

Video of the incident shows officers speaking to the man.

Eventually the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team was called in to assist.

Burnaby firefighters were on scene for “medical reasons,” according to Kalanj.

“They’re usually the first on scene for anything,” he said.

At about 8 p.m., ERT officers breached the door of the man’s hotel room, arrested him under the Mental Health Act and brought him to hospital, according to Kalanj.
