The Burnaby-New Westminster health delivery area has reported 587 cases of COVID-19 in the past week, a 48.7% increase over the previous week.
The Fraser North health delivery area — which includes Tri-Cities, Burnaby, New Westminster and Maple Ridge — has now registered 2,996 cases since January.
The numbers build on historical data released today by BC Centre for Disease Control indicating that cases of COVID-19 more than tripled in October.
New cases of COVID-19 jumped by 21% in Burnaby last month, as cases in the city have surged since the beginning of September. Cases spiked again in October, with 287 compared to 238 cases in September.
Dr. Bonnie Henry announced four new deaths and 1,130 new cases over the last two days, including a record 594 cases over the last 24 hours.
New modelling from the BCCDC indicates cases of COVID-19 are doubling across the province every 13 days.
That’s put pressure on contact tracers, whose work is critical to understanding and isolating the virus before it’s transmitted further.
“We’re reaching our limits,” said Dr. Henry, urging Metro Vancouverites to heed her latest public health orders.
Earlier in the week, Fraser Health declared two new COVID-19 outbreaks in Burnaby, while announcing the end of another. A resident at Finnish Manor and two staff members at Dania Home have tested positive for COVID-19. Fraser Health has declared outbreaks at these locations, and a rapid response team is at each site. The resident and two staff members are currently in self-isolation at their homes.

An outbreak at St. Michael’s Centre is now over. St. Michael’s Centre is a long-term care and hospice facility in Burnaby owned and operated by St. Michael’s Centre Hospital Society.
Fraser Health has also been dealing with two other COVID-19 outbreaks in Burnaby.
Burnaby’s Fellburn Care Centre in Burnaby has seen more than 50 cases in its outbreak, including more than a dozen staff members testing positive for COVID-19. CTV is reporting there have also been at least four deaths at Fellburn.
