A 75-year-old pedestrian is in serious but stable condition after being hit by an SUV in Burnaby last night.
Burnaby RCMP got a call at 6:40 p.m. saying a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Central Boulevard and Bonsor Avenue, according to a police news release.
The pedestrian, a 75-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.
The driver remained on scene and continues to cooperate with the investigation, according to police.
Burnaby RCMP is now asking anyone who witnessed the collision or might have dashcam video in the area when it took place to contact police at 604-646-9999. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Police are also asking drivers and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads now that daylight hours are shorter.
Drivers:
- Focus on the road. Always leave your phone alone while driving.
- Be ready to yield to pedestrians, especially when turning at intersections and near transit stops.
- If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may be yielding for pedestrians.
Pedestrians:
- Be careful at intersections. Watch for drivers turning left or right through the crosswalk.
- Always use crosswalks and follow the pedestrian signs and traffic signals.
- Make eye contact with drivers, as it’s hard to see pedestrians when visibility is poor.
- Never assume that the driver has seen you.
