There's the old adage, "cool as a cucumber," but Burnaby Farmers' Market might have coined a new one, "zip like a zucchini," this past weekend.
The great zucchini races brought together some of the top zucchini engineers in Burnaby city hall's parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 17, where locally grown produce found a new purpose.
With the body of a green vegetable, commonly mistaken as a cucumber, zucchini with carrot slices for tires, and exterior designs, including pipe cleaners and feathers - the sunny weather provided for a great day to test out the veggie speeders.
The Burnaby Farmers' Market opened the season on May 4 and it ends on Oct. 26. Every month has seen a special event planned, including this month's zucchini races. September's event is "the market is going to the dogs," and October's will be halloween themed, according to the market's manager.
"We have the most convenient market in town," Lyn Hainstock said in an earlier interview with the NOW. "You get out of your car and walk three feet to your nearest vendor."
