Green’s the theme with this year's Burnaby Business Hall of Fame inductee, ABC Recycling.
The Burnaby-based company is known in the city for its environmental and charitable efforts. Earlier this year, the company received the Private Sector Achievement Award from the Recycling Council of B.C. The company also raises funds for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Mayor Derek Corrigan will welcome the family business, which has existed for 101 years, to the hall of fame at the annual Burnaby Business Excellence Awards luncheon on Oct. 10, according to a press release.
“To be recognized in our home town is such an honour,” company CEO David Yochlowitz said in the release. “We are so proud to have grown our business here, to be supported by the community, and to have the opportunity to give back wherever we can.”
ABC Recycling diverts up to 20,000 tonnes per month of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal from municipal landfills, employs a full-time environment officer, and it recycles different kinds of scrap metals from households, scrap automobiles, industrial construction and demolition sites, which it then sells worldwide. It is also part of the kidney car program and metal program.
The company has eight locations across B.C. and Alberta with more than 200 employees, and has customers in Western Canada and around the world.
“When we look at potential inductees to the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame, we are looking for an organization that is more than simply a highly successful business, but for one that also plays a significant role in enhancing the community,” Burnaby Board of Trade President and CEO Paul Holden said in the release. “ABC Recycling has been an important part of the Burnaby community since the 1970s and has helped many local groups such as United Way of the Lower Mainland, Burnaby Hospital Foundation and the Kidney Foundation of Canada, as well as supporting a significant number of local charitable events and programs. ABC Recycling is a highly successful company with strong community values and we are delighted to welcome them into the Hall of Fame.”
The company received the Employee Campaign Loyalty Award from Scotiabank and the United Way in 2011 and was recognized as Business of the Year at the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards in 2008.
