Activists target Burnaby gas station

Anonymous activists criticize Chevron for polluting, building a pipeline in indigenous territory

Police are investigating a case of environmental activism that targeted four Chevron gas stations, including one in Burnaby.

On Aug. 21, at about 6:20 a.m., a group of five men in construction garb descended on the Chevron gas station at 3030 Boundary Rd. They removed gas nozzles from the pumps and chained them together, rendering them useless.

In all, four gas stations were hit - one in Burnaby and three in Vancouver. (Local RCMP are investigating the Burnaby case, while Vancouver police are handling the other three.) Police classify the incident as "mischief," but no charges have been laid.

The action was caught on video and published on YouTube.

The narrative criticizes Chevron for dumping billions of gallons of toxic waste over three decades in Ecuadorian Amazon. The activists also take aim at Chevron's Pacific Trails pipeline, which cuts through traditional First Nations territory.

In May, the Burnaby Chevron refinery was also targeted by activists, who chained themselves to the fence.
