Police have arrested a prolific offender who allegedly committed a series of break-and-enters in south Burnaby.
According to Burnaby RCMP, about two months ago officers began investigating a series of break-and-enters in the Marine Drive area.
They soon identified a suspect, and on June 4, officers witnessed a 38-year-old Burnaby man allegedly breaking into a home on Marine Drive. The suspect was carrying jewelry, a laptop and other allegedly stolen property police when he was arrested, according to a media release from the police department.
The suspect is now facing one count of break-and-enter following the June 4 incident. The investigation is ongoing.
“This arrest will have a significant impact in reducing the number of break-and-enters in south Burnaby,” Burnaby RCMP Supt. Stephan Drolet said in the release. “Burnaby detachment has seen an increase in break-and-enters and the ability of (officers) to focus on such targets will make a substantial difference to our citizens, as well as reducing calls to police.”
On Aug. 10, the suspect in the recent string of break-and-enters is scheduled to stand trial in Vancouver Provincial Court for another alleged break-and-enter in December 2014, also in Burnaby. In December 2014 he was also sentenced to one day in prison for a break-and-enter in August 2011. Before that, in April 2013, he was sentenced to 19 months and 25 days in jail after four break-and-enters in January of that year.
